Medicare and Allied Health

Medicare funding for allied health services

What is Medicare funding?

Medicare provides rebates for selected allied health services when a GP referral and approved care plan are in place. There are two main pathways:

  • Chronic Condition Management Plan (CCMP), also known as a GP Management Plan (GPMP) or Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan. This provides access to up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year for individuals with chronic or complex health conditions.
  • Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) — provides access to up to 10 psychology or counselling sessions per calendar year for individuals with a diagnosable mental health condition.

See your local GP for a referral to one of these care plans then contact us to schedule your appointment

GP Referrals

A valid GP referral is required to access Medicare-funded allied health services. Your GP will assess your health needs and determine whether a Chronic Disease Management Plan or Mental Health Care Plan is appropriate, specifying the allied health discipline, number of sessions, and relevant Medicare item numbers. Once you have your referral, simply bring it to your first appointment at Steps2Life so we can confirm your eligibility and session details.

Medicare Rebates

Medicare rebates are set by the government and help offset the cost of eligible allied health sessions, though they typically do not cover the full session fee. A gap payment, the difference between the Medicare rebate and our session fee may apply. Rebate amounts and session limits are determined by your referral type and current Medicare guidelines, and we provide clear information about fees and rebate processing before your first appointment.

How to Access Services

To access Medicare-funded allied health services at Steps2Life, start by visiting your GP to discuss your health needs and determine whether a Chronic Disease Management Plan or Mental Health Care Plan is appropriate. Once your GP prepares the referral, contact our team to book your initial appointment. We will confirm your referral details, eligible sessions, and rebate process before your first visit.
